August 9th is a day to honour and remember  all Canadian peacekeepers who have served or are currently serving in support  of peace operations around the world. This date  was chosen to commemorate the events of August 9, 1974, when nine Canadian  peacekeepers serving with the United Nations Emergency Force in Egypt and  Israel lost their lives when their plane was shot down over Syria.

On 11 August, 2013, a ceremony of Remembrance was held in Ottawa at the Reconciliation Monument and was attended by various peacekeeping groups including the military, RCMP, and other police organizations.  Speakers included Gen (ret’d) Belzile and Minister of State (Democratic Reform) Pierre Poilievre and the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen Tom Lawson also attended.
