On Tuesday night (4th) the Annual Candlelight Tribute to Veterans was held at the Centrepoint Theatre in Ottawa. As with each year, the city names a street after a deserving veteran and this year the veteran was Helen Rapp, a champion of womens’ rights and the first female veteran to have a street named after her. Helen has passed away but on hand to accept the honour were her husband and family members. The acceptance speech was given by her son John. which outlined all her achievements and involvement in charities and the Canadian War Museum as a volunteer.
Speakers at this years event were His Worship Jim Watson, Mayor of Ottawa, and the Honourable Julien Fantino, Minister of Veterans Affairs. Also introduced was the new Deputy Minister of Veterans Affairs, former Chief of the Defence Staff, Walter Natynczyk.
