And welcome to another season of Lame Ducks Hockey! Wednesday saw the Lame Ducks (made up of Defence Liaison Officers from the various embassies in town) challenge the GOFOs (General Officers and Flag Officers from the Department of National Defence and led by the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Jonathon Vance) in a spirited match won by the GOFOs 6-3. In a very rare event, no-one complained about the officiating but that may have been because the Governor-General, His Excellency David Johnston, was one of the refs.
The game was a full three periods where the skating and puck handling abilities of the GOFOs (Canadians who grew up playing the game) clearly outshone that of the Lame Ducks (some putting on skates for the first time) but what the Ducks lacked in ability they more than made up for in enthusiasm and sportsmanship. After the game everyone met for pizza and beer at the pub where remarks were made by the Governor-General and Gen. Thibault and a Commanders Coin was presented to Captain(N) Jorge Parga (Chile) and Maj-Gen Al Meinzinger was given a game puck as MVPs for the Ducks and the GOFOs.
