Thursday night at the Canada Aviation and Space Museum was all things Star Trek to inaugurate the Starfleet Academy Experience exhibit, which opened to the public on Friday. Thursday night was the big Gala and sneak preview for lucky ticket holders which saw William Shatner himself, John de Lancie (“Q” from The Next Generation), and RenĂ© Auberjonois (Odo from Deep Space 9) mingle and have pictures taken with the guests. Many people came dressed as their favourite Star Trek characters.
The evenings festivities included a VIP reception, sneak preview of the exhibit, technology prize awards and the talk by William Shatner in front of 1,000 people. Mr. Shatner also helped the Royal Canadian Mint unveil a new $10 coin with his likeness commemorating 50 years of Star Trek.
The evening ended with a martial arts demonstation by Klingons and Vulcans (?) and then acrobats doing a rope and ring act amongst the aircraft with rope and ring attached to the ceiling of the Museum. After that, those who could stayed to dance to the music.
