The day started out badly. Torrential rain and high winds showed no sign of abatement right up until noontime. But the Lord loves the military and the rain let up in time for the National Military Ride, a motorcycle procession that ends at the National Military Cemetery (Beechwood Cemetery) where the riders participated in a Remembrance service to commemorate Canada’s fallen military. After the service, riders were encouraged to pass among the headstones and plant Canadian flags by the headstones.
This year, the event was organized by the Royal Canadian Legion as the event was fast outgrowing the capabilities of a volunteer organization. According to the Legion website, “The National Memorial Ride is the only event sanctioned by the Canadian Armed Forces, the Beechwood Cemetery and the Legion, inviting large numbers of Veteran motorcycle enthusiasts to visit the site on their motorcycles and pay their respects”.
