CANSEC, the foremost show of military suppliers in the country, was once again held in person at the EY Centre in Ottawa on the 1st and 2nd June, 2022, complete with anti-military protesters who clearly are unaware of what can happen to an unprepared country, i.e. Ukraine.
On display were many vendors from major ship and aircraft suppliers to small munitions and niche clothing manufacturers. There are too many things to cover in a short blog but go through the pictures to see some of the hardware. The one thing that stood out to me comes from A.I.rSHARE (a Canadian company) was the 40 mm Integrated Dismounted Soldier Launch System (IDLS) which is about the size of a machine pistol but carries a 40 mm missile as its projectile (see images 397-399).
Now, while this is specifically made to go after drones, I’m sure it can be applied to soft-skinned vehicles as well. Man portable, cheap (under $4k), next to no training required. Maybe not the most glamourous thing at the show, but it caught my attention.
As well as vendors, there were keynote speakers at the breakfasts and luncheons. Speakers included Anita Anand, MP and Minister of National Defence, DND VCDS LGen. Frances Allen, Jeremy Quin, MP and UK Minister of State for Defence Procurement, and Filomena Tassi, Minister of Public Services and Procurement. All brought interesting viewpoints and should anyone require soundbites, I have audio of all the speeches.
It’s a long two day show but worth the visit if you get time, just to keep up on the new technology. On the plus side, it did rain on the protesters. To see all the pictures, CLICK HERE
