This is a photo of Air Canada Captain (ret’d) Bob Pearson who rose to fame when he landed a Boeing 767-233 airliner, which had lost power to both engines, in Gimli, Manitoba, on 23 July, 1983. There was no loss of life during the landing and the incident has become known as the Gimli Glider. It should also be noted that the aircraft had lost almost all of its’ instruments and the nose gear did not deploy on landing.
Capt. Pearson was hosted by the Project North Star group at the Canada Aviation and Space Museum on 07 Dec. 2013, where he recounted the events that led up to his losing power in the two engines and his subsequent landing of the disabled aircraft and the aftermath of the event. It was very interesting to hear him speak and to get the “unvarnished” account of what happened.
